Ultrapar Participações S.A. was constituted on December 20, 1953 and its origins date back to 1937, when Ernesto Igel founded Companhia Ultragaz and introduced LPG as cooking gas in Brazil. It was also a pioneer in the development of the Brazilian petrochemical industry, which led to the formation of Oxiteno S.A. Indústria e Comércio in 1970, at the recently inaugurated Pólo Petroquímico de Mauá in São Paulo.

The history of the company accompanies the development of the country. At the beginning of its operations, with a fleet of only 3 trucks and 166 direct customers, it faced the rationing of the Second World War with differentiated solutions, such as the creation of a supply line through Argentina. In 1970, it has created Oxiteno, a pioneer company in the production of ethylene oxide and its derivatives in Brazil. After 16 years, to meet the specific needs of its customers, it has created its research and development center.

In 1997, the Group has started the Ultrasystem, it began the process of geographical expansion of Ultragaz - through the construction of new LPG bottling bases - and finalized the expansion of Oxiteno's plants at Pólo Petroquímico de Camaçari (BA).

Until September of the following year, Ultrapar was controlled by Pery Igel, son of Ernesto Igel, founding partner of Ultragaz and Grupo Ultra. In 1984, Pery Igel carried out a succession plan with the aim of professionalizing the company. The implementation of this plan allowed a smooth transition of control after his death in September 1998.

On October 6, 1999, the Group concluded the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Ultrapar Participações’ preferred shares, with its shares traded on the São Paulo Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2007, Ultrapar acquires the fuel distribution operations of the Ipiranga Group in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. And in 2009, Texaco's fuel distribution operations, making it the second largest fuel distributor in Brazil.

In 2011, Ultrapar's preferred shares were converted into common shares and were traded in Novo Mercado.
In 2013, Ultrapar announced the association with Extrafarma thus marking the company's entry into the significant and growing Brazilian pharmaceutical retail market.

Today Ultrapar operates through five companies:

  1. 1 - Ipiranga (Fuel distribution) – the second largest fuel distributor in Brazil.
  2. 2 - Ultragaz (LPG Distributor) – largest distributor of LPG in Brazil and one of the largest independent distributors in the world in terms of volume sold.
